The Rest of the Departments Practice Test

The main idea is tracing the origin of the department. The entity that would become the Department of Health and Human Services started in 1953, when the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) was created by reorganizing several agencies, including the Public Health Service. This creates the historical lineage of HHS. In 1980, HEW was split, and the remaining part was renamed Health and Human Services, but that 1980 event is a rename/reorganization, not the original establishment. So 1953 is the year the department’s lineage began.
